Reception – Term 1, Week 6

  • PE kit – We will be starting PE this week. Please ensure your child has a PE bag with kit inside (no trainers needed until Term 5) in school. We will send these home at the end of every term to be washed.
  • Reading books – Your child will bring home their first reading book on Monday. It may only have pictures and some may have simple words. We have put together a short blog post (click here) for you to read to enable you to support your child to read. We will be sharing a lot more information and top tips at the meeting after the phonics learn-a-long on 16th October 2024.
  • Phonics learn-a-long – Reception parents are invited to watch a phonics lesson (9 – 9:30am) in their child’s class on Wednesday 16th October 2024. This will be followed by a parent meeting (9:30 – 10am) which will enable you to support your child at home reading their book. For now, please read the information in the blog post linked above.
  • Please find the lunch menu by clicking here.
  • Please use the school calendar to find up-coming dates.
  • Please make sure your child has a coat in school every day. We will go outside even when it is cold and raining.
  • Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day.

This week the children have continued to build relationships and explore the different areas of the setting together. They have also been creative unicorns making colourful wax crayon and Brusho chameleons after learning all sorts of different chameleon facts!

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We are having a focus on self-regulation this week, supporting the children to identify their own feelings and discuss what we can do when we are feeling different ways. We will be using the Colour Monster story to support this.

Communication and Language

We will continue to practise speaking, listening and asking questions using our All About Me Box.

The children will act out the main events from the ‘Mixed up Chameleon’ story.

Word of the week: adapt

We will continue using Makaton signs for emotions:

Physical development

We will be starting our first PE lesson this week which will focus on listening and following instructions. The children will be shown how to use the space safely and we will be learning different skills such as balancing and exploring footwork.

Literacy

This week in Phonics, we will be learning the graphemes/ phonemes: ck, e, u, r

And the common exception words: to,  into

We will practice blending phonemes to read and segmenting words to spell them using the phonemes and graphemes we have learned so far.

Children will continue to draw a picture of their family together with any letters they know.

This week, we will be focusing on simple patterns. The children will have opportunities to identify and create patterns using objects and actions. They will be challenged to spot the mistakes in patterns too.

Expressive arts and Design

The children will be exploring colour mixing this week. We will be providing them with different primary colours and trying out different ways to mix them to create new colours.

Religion and Worldviews

Over the following weeks, look out for the All About Me Box which will come home at some point for your child to put in their special objects/ photos they would like to share.

Continuing our Big Question:”Who am I?” We will talk about special objects and read the Christian story of the Precious Pearl.
