Thank you to those of you that have already sent in history questionannires about what life was like when you or grandparents were younger. As well as interesting for the children it has been nostaglic for teachers too!
If you haven’t already please return questionnaires and send in any toys from the past by Monday 7th October that you are happy to be handled delicately at circle time. These might include toys you played with (as parents and carers, or toys that older family members played with. We are interested in looking at a range of technology and materials. Please do feel free to send in photos too.

Friday 4th October – Inset day– School closed to children
Monday 14th October – Westonbirt Trip – please wear suitable clothing and shoes for the weather as we will be outside all day. Please also ensure your child has a packed lunch and water bottle.
Tuesday 15th October – Phonics learn-a-long KS1 – 9am in classrooms. We will be monitoring attendance for classes and hope to have as many of you there as possible: it’s such a great opportunity to see how reading skills are taught in our school.
Friday 25th October – End of Term 1. Non uniform day. Contributions to FHIS.
Monday 4th November – INSET day – school closed to children.

English
Phonics
This week we will be continuing revision of Phase 4. In year 1 we start with a revision of sounds taught in Reception to ensure that children are secure in their decoding and blending skills before moving onto learning new sounds. This week we will be focusing on:

Handwriting focus:
Our whole school begins a new handwriting scheme this year: Unlocking Letters and Sounds Handwriting. This term we are looking at number formation mastery. This week we will be consolidating 6,7,8 and 9. As part of our revision of common exception words, we will also be practicing all previously taught words from previous weeks.
Writing
This week we will be writing about ourselves using adjectives. Examples of adjectives in a sentence:
I have brown hair. I have blue eyes.
Reading
We have started guided reading in Year 1 and the children are really enjoying group reading. Please ensure books are brought in daily. Daffodil will be changing books and visiting the library on Tuesday. Cherry will be changing books on a Thursday. They will have 2 x reading books, 1 x reading for pleasure book (book corner) and 1 x library book.
Maths
Number fluency
Counting forwards and backwards from any number within 20.
Number formation
Recognise numbers written as words.

Main learning
We are moving onto a new area – addition and subtraction within 10. This week we are:
Understand that the numbers six to nine are composed of ‘five and a bit.’ Ten is ‘five and another five’

Wider Curriculum
PE- SHINE Outside Session – Team Games
Class PE – Fundamental Movement Skills: Footwork Patterns including hopping, galloping, skipping and zig zagging
PSHE – We will be learning about different emotions and focusing on how friendships can make us feel. As well as talking about what makes good teamwork.
R+WV – We will be focusing on ‘family’ groups and looking at how everyone’s family is different. We will be linking this with Christianity and looking at the story of young Jesus in the Temple from the bible.
Art – We will be mixing autumnal colours and looking at what different shades we can make with yellow and orange.
Science – We will be learning about trees and naming the parts of a tree. We will be linking this back to what we already know about the parts of a plant and how they link together.
History – We will be looking at our toy questionnaires from last week and sharing any toys from the past brought in from family members.
Music – we will creating our own representations for musical notes
