Noticeboard
- Please bring in any donations of dried/canned food for the Salvation Army’s harvest collection by Wednesday 23rd October 2024. The collection will go to support the Salvation Army’s work with the homeless and vulnerable people in our city.
- PE kit – We have started teaching PE. Please ensure your child has a PE bag with kit inside (no trainers needed until Term 5) in school. We will send these home at the end of every term to be washed.
- Phonics learn-a-long – Reception parents are invited to watch a phonics lesson (9 – 9:30am) in their child’s class on Wednesday 16th October 2024. This will be followed by a parent meeting (9:30 – 10am) which will enable you to support your child at home reading their book. For now, please read the information in the reading blog post.

- Please make sure your child has a coat in school every day. We will go outside even when it is cold and raining.
- Please do not allow your child to play with the resources that are on the Reception patio in the morning. These have been carefully positioned and are there to support your child’s learning during the school day.
Celebrations
The children had their first PE lessons this week and we were very impressed with their listening and independent changing skills! We had fun exploring the space and using our bodies in different ways to move around the hall.
This week’s learning
This week, we will start to learn about the ELLI Unicorn. The Unicorn can be imaginative and come up with creative solutions. We will be using the story ‘Sugarlump and the Unicorn’ as our key text.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We will be identifying different feelings this week and how they might look to others. We will do this by looking at pictures of children showing different emotions and using mirrors we will try to mimic the feelings they are demonstrating.
Communication and Language
We will continue to share the All About Me Box in class (every child will have a turn). We will be reading Sugarlump and the Unicorn and recalling the events in the story.

Physical development
This week we will be practising the skill of side stepping whilst maintaining balance and control.
Literacy
This week in Phonics, we will be learning the graphemes/ phonemes: h, b, f, ff
And the common exception words: I, no
We will practice blending phonemes to read and segmenting words to spell them using the phonemes and graphemes we have learned so far.
Writing:
This week we will be practising writing our names, focusing on pencil grip, letter formation and only having capital letters at the beginning of our names.
Maths
This week, we will be matching quantities to numerals (up to 5), identifying sets in our classroom environments and continue to practise our subitising skills.
Understanding the World
We will be exploring different seasons this week with a focus on the changes of autumn.
Expressive arts and Design
We will be being creative unicorns this week and making unicorn masks using a range of materials.
Religion and Worldviews
We will be thinking about making good choices, and hearing a story from the Bible about Jonah.
